THAO DAN's Programs Empowering, Supporting and Protecting the Street Children Outreach Program
Thao Dan’s street-based programs reach over 100 children every year. The locations we target are the Tao Dan public park, the Pham Ngu Lao area, the Bach Dang riverside, the 23/9 public park, and other areas in central Ho Chi Minh City. This outreach program emphasizes the development of a trust between the street educators and the children. It includes the following components: Intermediate Intervention • Provision of basic needs: first-aid medical treatment, food, clothing & contraception. Education & Communication • Classes teaching basic literacy, math, & English. • Workshops on children's rights, HIV/AIDS prevention, drug awareness, & basic life skills. • Payment of school fees. • Recreational programs. Advocacy & Referrals • Enrollment in school • Vocational placement • Counseling • Referral to other agencies • Jobs and vocational placements
Drop-In Center
Thao Dan’s street-based This dual-purpose house is designed for new street children. Here they can safely store their belongings and take refuge while they discuss their options with program educators. Children also receive health care, clothing, proper meals, as well as opportunities to participate in various activities and classes. The Drop-In Center is also the site of the Thao Dan administrative office. Safe House
For boys under the age of 18, this house holds up to 20 children. Here, boys have a stable place to live while they study, work, or complete vocational training. Many boys are reunited with their families during their stay, while others are referred to community organizations depending on their needs. Consultation Office
Aiming to help and prevent cases of sexually abused children, children addicted to drugs, and children with HIV/AIDS, our counseling activity reaches directly out to the streets. We provide education on drug use, HIV/AIDS, children’s rights, and living skills, helping the children learn how to properly protect themselves from social dangers and to change their lifestyles in order to suit social standards. Children are also introduced to our Safe House and to free city services, such as medical check-ups and treatment. Micro-Enterprise Development
Thao Dan provides children and their families with capital in order to start small enterprises and earn a more stable income. By addressing the underlying issue of poverty, families can make better livings, thus helping to keep their children off the streets. |
